Quake rehabilitation: role of the microbiologists to be discussed

The Pakistan Society for Microbiology (PSM) will hold a panel discussion on the role of the microbiologists and other scientists towards rehabilitation and reconstruction of the quake affectees and the affected areas.
This was announced by the spokesperson for the PSM in a statement here on Monday. It said: "The panel discussion is scheduled to be held on October 22 at Salimuzzaman Science Centre, Gulshan-e-Iqbal here."
The panel of experts consists of Professor Dr Ateef Qureshi, Director, Medical Microbiology Laboratories, St. Georges University, Granada, West Indies; Professor .Dr Essa Abdulla, President of Pakistan Society for Microbiology; Professor Dr Ghaffar Billo of the Age Khan University; Khalid Ali Khan, Secretary of PASSP and others.
It was further pointed out that the PSM Earthquake Relief Team consisting of professional microbiologists, microbiology students and other volunteers would soon join the relief work in the affected areas.
THE PSM HAS ALSO CALLED FOR DONATING GENEROUSLY TOWARDS THE PRESIDENT'S EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND AND THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
1. Rapid diagnostic kits for bacterial and viral infections. Blood grouping kits, urine and stool testing reagents; disinfectants (water, food and air); antibiotics, ointments, antiseptics etc.
2. Microbiological media, prepared plates, plastic petri-plates, antibiotic discs. Microscopes, Gram-staining kits, sterile swabs, masks, syringes, gloves, protective aprons, incubators
3. Vaccines (typhoid, cholera, tetanus , hepatitis-B, influenza, pneumonia), sterile containers for clinical samples.
4. Tents, new blankets, big size diapers, lanterns, candles, stoves etc.
