THE RUPEE: slight gains in interbank rates

Marginal gains were seen in the interbank market as the rupee picked up two paisa versus the dollar buying and selling at 59.72 and 59.73, dealers said.
In the process of strong supply of dollar, the rupee was able to gain strength, they said, adding that if the dollar demand increases by the corporate sector, the rupee might show some weakness but the slide would be limited.
The dollar touched the two-year high against the yen in the international markets, they said.
The rupee gained further 50 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 71.70 and Rs 71.80 esprectively in process of trading, dealers said

According to the currency dealers, the dollar continued rising trend for the second consecutive day. Its trading commenced at overnight closing rates of Rs 59.95 and Rs 60.05 on buying and selling counters, respectively. As a result of fresh buying, the greenback's rate moved up and closed at Rs 60.00 and Rs 60.10 on buying and selling sides, respectively, the dealers added.
However, the local currency registered gain against the pound sterling. The British pound was purchased at Rs 104.50 and was sold at Rs 104.80 as compared to previous closing rates of Rs 105.50 and Rs 105.80, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 60.15 (buying) and Rs 60.25 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe any further change in the second spell and closed at Rs 60.15 (buying) and Rs 60.25 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 104.50 (buying) and Rs 105 (selling) against same last rate. It did not show any further change and closed at Rs 104.50 (buying) and Rs 105 (selling).
