Asif wrecks England's batting in second match

07 Nov, 2005

Burgeoning paceman Mohammad Asif took seven wickets to end England's hopes of batting practice in their second warm-up match against Pakistan 'A' here on Sunday.
The 23-year-old lanky paceman wrecked England's batting line-up with figures of seven for 62 in 16.1 accurate overs to bundle them out for a meager 126 in 35.1 overs on the first day of the three-day match at Bagh-e-Jinnah stadium.
England's paceman Matthew Hoggard then put his team back on track by grabbing 4-39 as bowlers dominated on a greenish pitch which saw 18 wickets fall in the day.
Pakistan 'A', however, recovered through a sixth wicket stand of 60 between Hasan Raza (34) and Aminur Rehman (32) before Ashley Giles removed both of them and Arshad Khan in successive overs.
The home team closed on 127-8, one run ahead with two wickets intact.
England's second batting collapse, after their top order flopped in the tour opener at Rawalpindi last week, triggered alarm in the tourists' camp ahead of their three-match Test series against Pakistan.
The first Test starts at Multan on November 12.
Asif, who played one Test on Pakistan's tour of Australia earlier this year, bowled a superb line and swung the ball. None of the England batsmen could put up any significant resistance after Vaughan won the toss and decided to bat.
Asif's new ball partner Shahid Nazir removed opener Andrew Strauss with a sharp delivery, caught behind for five in the fifth over.
Strauss had managed five and six in the first match at Rawalpindi.
Asif then removed Marcus Trescothick in his fourth over, sending the experienced opener's bails airborne with a sharp cutter. Trescothick, who made a fighting unbeaten 124 and 38 in the first match, made just eight.
Kevin Pietersen, whose form is a worry on the tour, fell to Nazir in the 13th over when he miscued a drive and was caught by wicket-keeper Rehman for four.
Asif then dismissed captain Michael Vaughan (17) and Paul Collingwood (0) - both caught in the slips in his seventh over - to have England reeling on four for 34.
In his next two overs, Asif sent Geraint Jones (0) and allrounder Andrew Flintoff (9) back to the pavilion in a remarkable spell of 11 overs, taking five for 43.
Ashley Giles (21) and topscorer Shaun Udal (23) added 34 invaluable runs for the eighth wicket but Asif returned for a second spell after lunch to dismiss Udal and last man Steve Harmison to wrap up the innings.
"I am delighted to take seven wickets and this can earn me a Test place," said Asif, who took seven wickets in a match for a second time following his seven for 35 for Sialkot against Multan last year.
Hoggard then matched Asif blow for blow as he removed opener Taufiq Umer (six) in his third over and followed it up with the wickets of Faisal Athar (0), Shahid Yousuf (10) and Imran Farhat (23) in his spell of six overs.
