The export of high-grade cotton by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has been criticised by the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (Prgmea).
Prgmea (Sindh-Balochistan zone) Chairman Atiq A. Kochra, in a statement to the press issued here on Saturday, said: "This would strengthen our competitors in textile export."
He said the government instead of allowing export of surplus cotton should direct the TCP to sell the same in the local market.
He said that Pakistan, being a cotton growing country, enjoyed an edge over its competitors in the present cut-throat competition in the free-trade era under the WTO, but the government's policy would deprive the textile exporters of this single advantage in export.
Selling surplus cotton in the local market would stabilise the price of the raw material used in manufacturing for export items, he said.-PR
