16 Nov, 2005

The Southern Region of Income Tax, Karachi, collected Rs 8660 million in the first four months (July-October) of fiscal year 2005-06, which is below the set target of Rs 9506 million for this period.
However, these figures depict impressive growth of 19 percent over Rs 7260 million of corresponding period of 2004-05. The tax collection on different heads show that Rs 7467 million was collected on account of withholding tax, up from Rs 6293 million of last year.
The collection of tax along with returns was Rs 763 million, higher from Rs 702 million compared to last year.
A total of Rs 119 million advance tax was collected, showing a rise against Rs 94 million. Recovery on refund issued was Rs 462 million in the four months against Rs 270 million of last year.
An official of Southern Region termed the recovery satisfactory, adding that recovery less than the target for this period was not worrisome. "These are initial months of financial year, and more would be coming into the national kitty in the remaining period, especially in last month--June--when highest tax collections are made and will be compensating this shortfall of less than target recovery," he added.
