Shahbaz Sharif made no deal with government: SCBA chief

19 Nov, 2005

President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Malik Muhammad Qayyum said on Friday that Mian Shahbaz Sharif, being his client, had announced on oath that he had no agreement with the government.
While addressing a press conference here he said that the government had failed to produce proof of any agreement with Sharif family before the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
No agreement is acceptable against the fundamental rights, he said. The government had not allowed Shahbaz Sharif to enter Pakistan, therefore, the Supreme Court itself should proceed contempt of court proceedings against the government, he observed.
Malik also called upon the Government of Pakistan to continue provision of facilities to the higher judges, including payment of full salary till their death. He further urged the government to equalise the age limit of the judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts. He was also of the view that the judges should not be engaged after their retirement.
He said that SCBA would assist the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its efforts to celebrate the golden jubilee ceremony. He said that the bar will work for the national cause and will hold conferences on constitutional issues in Pakistan, presidential form of government, mode of elections in Pakistan and role of judiciary in enforcement of law and justice.
He disclosed to media people that SCBA had decided to provide a platform to political leaders to speak on national issues and added that the bar will invite all the political personalities, including Benazir Bhutto, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Altaf Hussain to present their point of view from this forum. He said that the leaders who are abroad would be facilitated to address on telephone.
The SCBA chief also called upon the government to provide plots to all the lawyers in different housing schemes and ensure availability of a bar room in the Supreme Court premises.
