Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) has expressed its concern over CBR and Ministry of Commerce consideration to allow the import of old and used auto parts.
The estimates of smuggling of auto parts into Pakistan amounting to dollars one billion was baseless, said PAAPAM Chairman Razzak Ahmad in a statement issued here on Friday.
PAAPAM would like to take up the issue with Environmental Protection Agency and Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority whose objectives would also be seriously undermined with the import of used parts, he added.
He further said with the rapid development of industrial sector, hundred and thousands of components had come into production due to pressing demand available in the domestic market. Our manufacturers are also competing with the international markets by exporting quality components and parts. The import of used and old auto parts would ultimately put as adverse effect on the production of parts / assemblies, he added.
The Association Chairman demanded of the government not to jeopardise auto parts sectors and said the PAAPAM reaffirms its position of not supporting any relaxation or change in the import policy regarding old and used parts in any form.
