THE RUPEE: firmer trend in currency market

Rates almost unchanged in the currency market on Friday amid rising demand for the greenback, dealer said. In the interbank market, the rupee showed minor changes versus the dollar for buying and selling at 59.77 and 59.79, respectively.
Slight decline was seen in the dollar's demand due to weekend and long-holiday sessions in the US. The foreign exchange and most of the commercial centres remained closed due to thanksgiving day holiday in the United States. The markets will reopen on Monday.
Versus the single European currency, the rupee gained 10 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 70.30 and Rs 70.40, dealers said.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading at its overnight closing level of Rs 60.00 and Rs 60.10 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. However, as a result of increase in dollar's demand, its rate moved up and closed at Rs 60.05 and Rs 60.15 on buying and selling counters, respectively, the dealers added.
The local currency also remained depressed and depreciated its value against the pound sterling. The pound's buying rate improved from Thursday's closing of Rs 102.70 to Rs 102.80 while its selling rate soared from Rs 103.30 to Rs 103.20, the dealers stated.
Dollar opened at Rs 60.10 (buying) and Rs 60.20 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not witness any further change in the second session and closed at Rs 60.10 (buying) and Rs 60.20 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 103 (buying) and Rs 103.40 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe any change in the second session and closed at Rs 103 (buying) and Rs 103.40 (selling).
