02 Dec, 2005

The overall electricity generation of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) increased by 2011 Gwh (9.4 percent) during the first Quarter of July-September 2005-06, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to a performance report of Wapda, during first quarter of 2005-06, the thermal generation decreased by 972 Gwh (8.1 percent) as compared to the corresponding period of previous year, while the hydel generation increased by 2983 Gwh (31.8 percent) as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
This entailed decrease in the cost of fuel as compared to the last quarter of 2004-04 financial year by Rs 1.735 billion. Total cash collection during the period under review increased by Rs 3.302 billion as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year due to increased generation.
It, however, decreased by Rs11.647 billion as compared to the previous quarter (April-June 2005).
This variation was mainly due to clearance of major claims by public sector consumers, government of Pakistan and the IPPs (DSL) at the close of financial year. Cash outflow (before investment) increased by Rs 9.331 billion as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. It, however, decreased by Rs 2.546 billion as compared to the last quarter of 2004-05 financial year mainly because of decrease in O&M expenditure, cost of fuel and other cash flows.
