'More aftershocks in next two months'

04 Dec, 2005

More occasional aftershocks of around 5.0 intensity may continue during next two months, Met Office said on Saturday.
Careful analysis and seismic data of the region is indicating some more but occasional aftershocks in the region, the met office said in a statement.
"Though the frequency of the aftershocks has already decreased considerably, but the available sesmicity still indicate the possibility of aftershocks which may range around 5.0 on Richter scale at times," the statement added.
According to the met office, 1420 aftershocks had so far been recorded of which the maximum number - 122 - occurred on October 9. "Now this number has considerably decreased to about 8 to 10 a day."
This is not unusual because the number of aftershocks follows every severe earthquake with gradual falling frequency and occasional trend, the statement added.
