EU for just resolution of Kashmir issue

14 Dec, 2005

European Union Member Bushell Matthews has said European Union is engaged in promoting a just resolution of the Kashmir issue. He was speaking at a function organised by Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK in Birmingham to observe the Human Rights Day.
The MEP referred to the EU delegation, which had visited both sides of the Line of Control and produced an interim report describing Indian-held Kashmir as a "beautiful prison".
Matthews also referred to a recent debate in the European parliament, wherein India-Pakistan dialogue was welcomed expressing hope that all differences including the issue of Kashmir would be resolved.
Justice Foundation Kashmir Centre's Chief Executive Professor Shawl lauded the efforts of the EU for not only raising the level of awareness about the Kashmir conflict, but also backing global efforts to resolve it in line with aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
He said systematic human rights abuses were continuing at the hands of the Indian armed forces.
Shawl fully supported Pakistan's suggestion for the demilitarisation of the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, and said it could help in both ending the violence and laying a sound foundation for the solution to the Kashmir dispute.
Tahreek-e-Kashmir President Mohammad Ghalib thanked MEP Matthews for his support on Kashmir issue, and said despite the ongoing Indo-Pak dialogue, opening of the LoC at five points, the human rights situation in Indian- held Kashmir had yet to show signs of improvement.
Ghalib said that international organisations, both aid and relief, should be allowed to reach out to the earthquake victims in Indian-held Kashmir.
