Government faces embarrassment in National Assembly

14 Dec, 2005

The government faced great embarrassment in the National Assembly on Tuesday as a treasury member took it to task over suspension of electrification work in different villages of NWFP.
Speaking on a calling attention notice Advocate Sher Akber Khan criticised the government for not completing electrification of villages in district Bonair and Dir.
Sher Akber said that the people of Bonair are facing loadshedding and asked the government to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
However, Minister of State for Water and Power Amir Muqam tried to negate the statement that 25 villages in Bonair and Dir have not yet supplied electricity. On this Sher Akber Khan said Amir Muqam was misleading the House.
Amir Muqam said that 85 projects regarding provision of electricity to villages are being carried out. In 25 villages the work has been completed in Upper Dir.
He said that 25 million people were allocated electricity poles and Water and Power Ministry would spend this amount.
Sherry Rehman criticised the government claims of press freedom, saying that journalist Hayatullah has been kidnapped.
She said that the law minister has said that record regarding journalist' s kidnapping issue would be presented in the House, but the government has so far taken no action even after passage of eight days.
