The Medium Taxpayer Units (MTUs) at Faisalabad and Quetta would become operational from the first week of January 2006. The Board-in-Council has decided that MTU Faisalabad would start functioning from January 2006, whereas the work on the MTU Quetta has been resumed, which would also become operational by this deadline.
Sources told Business Recorder on Sunday that the Board-in-Council has taken the decision to ensure functioning of MTUs at Faisalabad and Quetta without any delay. In this connection, the CBR Tax Policy and Reforms Wing has intensified efforts to complete all necessary work in this regard.
The MTUs in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Peshawar are already working, while two more MTUs will be operational in Faisalabad and Quetta shortly.
There is also a plan to establish 10 modern regional taxpayers offices (RTOs). The MTU Karachi is the largest unit among all units presently working. It deals with 225,000 taxpayers mainly belonging to salaried class and around 25,000 taxpayers belonging small businesses and industry and professionals like doctors, engineers.
