23 Dec, 2005

Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Functional) president Pir Pagara has announced his support for the construction of Kalabagh Dam, saying it would be beneficial for the people of Sindh. He was addressing a press conference at Kangri house here, on Thursday.
Pir Pagara said construction of the dam would enhance availability of water to Sindh. Thousands of acres of land would be able to cultivate crops in Thar and other areas of the province, he added.
He said some people had alleged the Kalabagh dam is being constructed only for Hurs of Sindh. "We want to make it clear when Hurs would benefit, all the people of the province would share benefits."
Pir Pagara said 'zamindars' are not opposing the construction of Kalabagh dam and those who are opposing the dam do not own any piece of land in the province. He called for implementation on the 1991 Water Accord, and said enough water was agreed for Sindh under the accord.
He said he has advised Hurs to support the Kalabagh dam, which will benefit them. He said dams are necessary for the country. People could get more water to cultivate crops and cheap electricity.
