After completing his visits to various parts of Sindh, President General Pervez Musharraf would soon tour other parts of the country to apprise people of the importance of construction of new dams, Information and Broadcasting Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on Saturday.
Addressing a big gathering organised by the PML Rawalpindi here, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the President had personally started mass awareness campaign in view of the pressing need for new water reservoirs.
He said the country was in dire need of raising its water storage capacity and if a timely decision was not taken it could face severe water shortage. If the new dams were not constructed well in time the situation could lead the country towards a severe drought in the coming decade, he warned.
Sheikh Rashid said construction of new water reservoirs would help usher in a new era of development and progress in the country.
"These (dams) will lead the country to an era of green revolution besides kicking off massive activity in the industrial sector by generating huge quantities of power," he said.
Referring to the role of Punjab, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said it had always been generous towards other provinces like an elder brother.
Minister for Law and Local Bodies Punjab Raja Bisharat, speaking on the occasion, also highlighted the need for constructing new reservoirs to overcome looming water shortage.
He urged people to help make President Musharraf's campaign for construction of new dams a complete success, as these were vital to keep rolling the wheel of life.
Adviser to the Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Nasir Raja, Pir Rahat Qudoosi, Nazim Rawalpindi Raja Muhammad Javed Ikhlas, and Tehsil Nazim of Kahuta Tariq Murtaza announced full support to President Musharraf's campaign aimed at securing the country's future.
A large number of councillor from union councils of Tehsil Kahuta, Nazimeen, Deputy Nazimeen, and lady councillor were also present.
