A sub-committee of the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament on Tuesday directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to recover Rs 0.8 million paid to a contractor for installing a digital clock at zero-point in Islamabad.
The contractor neither installed the clock nor returned the money. The meeting chaired by MNA Riaz Fatiyana asked the authority to explain its decision to purchase a costly clock.
CDA Chairman Kamran Lashari told the meeting that the prismatic vision clock imported from Sweden was fully automatic and controlled by electronic gear to display time, temperature and advertisements. Lashari said that a departmental inquiry was underway to get back the amount paid to the contractor.
The committee also directed the CDA to improve the sports and health-related activities in the federal capital by setting up gymnasium in different sectors and encouraging water sports at Rawal Dam Lake.
While appreciating the CDA chairman's efforts in making the federal capital more beautiful, the PAC urged the authority to further improve the environment by planting new trees and cutting off those causing allergic ailments.
