South Africa's rand briefly falls 1 percent in volatile trade

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's rand weakened as much as 1 percent on Thursday in volatile trade caused by uncertainty over the European Central Bank's monetary policy stance, analysts said.

The rand fell to a session low of 13.9800/dollar before recovering to 13.9300 by 1310 GMT, down 0.69 percent from Wednesday's close.
