07 Mar, 2006

Print and electronic media were restrained from attending to the proceedings of the Sindh Assembly on Monday under the instructions of Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim.
In the morning when newsmen reached the assembly building they were told at the gate elections to Senate seats were in progress and the chief minister had asked the law enforcement personnel to permit entry into the election premises of the voters only.
Members from the opposition protested against this attitude but the assembly staff at the gates did not permit entry to other than those whom, "on the voters' list". Only official media was permitted inside.
The officers of the Sindh Election Commission when came to know about this situation said that they had no objection to the presence of the press and the electronic media as they wanted to conduct all proceedings in absolutely transparent manners.
Later, journalists marched up to the Chief Minister House and staged protest.
