US stocks fell on Thursday, hit by a drop in transportation shares and news of surprising strength in the housing sector, which renewed worries about interest rates and pushed up bond yields.
Trucking company YRC Worldwide Inc warned that first quarter earnings would be much lower-than-expected, due to soft volumes and cost overruns.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 26.97 points, or 0.24 percent, at 11,290.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2.20 points, or 0.17 percent, at 1,302.84. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.34 points, or 0.15 percent, at 2,300.01.
The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 2.4 percent to 4,503.60 as YRC shares, a component, dropped almost 15 percent to $38.59 on Nasdaq.
