'Reduction in cost of crops production to benefit farmers'

01 Apr, 2006

Dr Khalid Hussain Gill, Director General, Agriculture (Research) Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad has urged agricultural scientists to make concerted efforts to reduce the cost of production of crops to enable farmers to obtain maximum profit of their produce.
Addressing a seminar arranged by Technology Transfer Institute of PARC Faisalabad, he said improvement in agriculture production was must for the food security while qualitative perfection in rural societies was also imperative to face the emerging challenges of new millennium.
He also called upon agriculture scientists to make efforts for bridging up the gap between research laboratories and practice in vogue in the agriculture fields.
The result of good work done by the agriculture scientists did not reach swiftly to common farmers, who were still engaged in practising the old methods with a natural result of low production rate and quality standards of pulses.
Explaining methods of reducing the production cost, the director general said that it was the responsibility of agricultural scientists to explore different aspects, which lead to achieving this goal.
Dr Khalid Gill emphasised the need of more research on pulses and said these plants were good source of protein and could be cultivated with minimum inputs and on less fertile soils.
Earlier, Abid Hussain, Scientific Officer, Technology Transfer Institute of PARC Faisalabad in a seminar on "Economics of Lentil Production in Barani Punjab" described in detail various economic aspects of lentil production.
He said that economic aspects of crop production had become main focus on agricultural research in present age and while making research on pulses, economic aspects need to be given special attention.
