Senate bodies asked to elect new chairpersons

Senate Chairman Mohammedmian Soomro has directed the standing and functional committees to elect their new Chairpersons, as contemplated by the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 1988, an official statement said on Monday.
In the light of the Senate Chairman's directive, the meetings of Senate standing/functional committees will be held on April 19, 20, 21 and 22 to elect the new chairpersons. The Senate Secretariat has issued intimation letters to all the members.
The Standing Committees on Defence and Defence Production; Foreign Affairs and Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas; Water and Power; Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs and Statistics; Education, Science and Technology; Communications, Railways and Petroleum and Natural Resources will meet on April 19 to elect their chairpersons, whereas Committees on Planning, Development and Population Welfare; Law, Justice, Human Rights and Parliamentary Affairs; Religious Affairs, Zakat, Ushr and Minorities Affairs; Food, Agriculture and Livestock; Culture, Sports, Youth Affairs and Tourism and Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis will elect chairpersons on April 20.
Similarly, for elections of the chairpersons of the Senate Committees on Local Government and Rural Development; Textile Industry; Women Development; Works and Environment and Urban Affairs and Ports and Shipping, the committees would meet on April 21.
On April 22, the meetings of the Senate Standing Committees on Narcotics Control, States and Frontier Regions will elect new chairpersons. Besides, the Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges; Senate Functional Committees on Problems of Less Developed Areas, Government Assurances and Human Rights will elect the chairpersons of these committees the same day, ie April 22.
