The Director General Environmental Protection Agency, Punjab, Choudhry Ahmed Nadeem, has said that owing to rapid growth of population in the urban areas and shifting of rural people to the big cities, the atmosphere has become polluted.
"Transport in the country's major cities is polluting the environment day by day which is injurious for public health. If we failed to regulate this unplanned influx of rural population towards cities the situation may become more complicated and worst," he added.
In an interview, Choudhry said that pollution whether of air, coil or water and whether the result of the production of use of energy the industrial transformation of materials or the use of agro-chemicals could be an immediate or long term threat to the human life and also to plantation and animals.
The millions of tons of potential toxic-chemicals produced by a number of factories in the country even in the world were polluting our environment.
"The environmental protection committee, under the supervision of Punjab government, is taking positive steps of the promotion of ideas about the protection of environment from pollution among the countrymen who could assist the agency by making some useful proposals for it."
He said the government of Pakistan felt itself to find out solution of environmental problems in the country and the creation of EPA was one of its efforts because it considered that provinces are equally responsible for the safeguard of the environment.
