Message from Managing Director Tetra Pak

24 Apr, 2006

I am delighted that Tetra Pak Pakistan is the proud recipient of the prestigious ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards 2005.
Our winner report is a sweet anthology of our endeavours in resource conservation and effective waste management in our areas of operations. I must thank ACCA and WWF while admitting that these awards have promoted greater transparency in the reporting of organisations' social and environmental impacts in Pakistan.
Our company, Tetra Pak, which is the world's leading food processing and packaging company, is determined to minimise its impact on climate change in line with our motto, "protects what's good," and we renew our pledge on Earth Day 2006. Realising the significance of climate change, we have just signed a three-year co-operation agreement with WWF - Sweden to globally cooperate in forestry and climate change programmes.
We understand that our operations affect the environment, and that is why we have allied with WWF to minimise our impact on climate change and ensure responsible forestry. In particular, the agreement proposes actions to demonstrate responsible purchasing of forest-based products and to reduce Tetra Pak's CO2 emissions over the next five years by an absolute 10%. We have also joined WWF's Climate Savers Programme. Along with WWF, Tetra Pak is supporting the development and promotion of forest certification and other tools of forest protection both internally and within the Global Forest Trade Network (GFTN). We are also supporting the creation of a WWF High Conservation Value Forest resource centre to provide a global source of expertise on forest management and conservation. As part of our environmental policy, Tetra Pak aims to increase energy efficiency in its facilities by 15% and increase the rate of post-consumer recycling to an ambitious 25% all over the world.
The key focus of our policy is highlighting the company's strategy of raising environmental awareness and implementing the global environmental policy while complying to local legislative requirements. Expansion of our recycling campaign, Proud Pakistanis Recycle to Karachi and other cities is a milestone achievement in this direction. Being an environmental leader also means giving something to the communities where we do business in. We work together with schools, local authorities and environmental groups. We support environmental programmes in many countries around the world, ranging from donating money to good causes, organising seminars about recycling, teaching kids about good environmental management, to rewarding teachers for their environmental programmes.
We have annual goals and we monitor and report on the progress we make. We have a professional, committed and well-connected environmental organisation covering operations world-wide. Finally, we have the company's and senior management commitment to the continuous improvement of Tetra Pak's environmental performance. The reason is simple as we believe that corporate profitability and environmental pro-activeness go hand in hand.
