Judges' remarks

24 Apr, 2006

The members of the Panel of Judges met on 18 March 2006 at Head Office, Lahore to evaluate the reports submitted by the entrants and concluded as follows:
At the launch of PERA 2005, it was announced that there will be a separate category for Best Textile report. The judges however thought that unless there is an exceptional report we should not increase the categories as award is a distinction and should be only given to the best performers.
This year a total of sixteen entries were received and were classified in three categories as a practice continuing from last three awards. The judges were delighted at the quality of the environmental reports this year.
However, the judges showed disappointment in entries in the form of annual reports as they had little or no information about the environmental performance of the organisation. Moreover the time frame for achieving specific targets was one essential element that was seen missing in some reports.
The number of first time reports also saw an increase this year. The judges were pleased to see that these first time reports had covered most of the essential aspects of an environmental report. The quality of disclosure was especially impressive. Reports with the comparative data analysis with previous years performance received special praise from the judges.
As in the previous year, the judges stressed on the companies to include a third party verification for the data used in environmental reports.
The jury also felt that the reports entered by the multinationals although good but not inline with their Parent company reports. It is desirable that companies with experience of environmental reporting globally should bring their expertise into Pakistan.
The panel discussed the idea forwarded by the secretariat that a concept of best sustainability reports that incorporated environmental, financial and social performance from entrants should be introduced in order to keep up with the emerging trends in the global markets and the practices being adopted in other countries as well.
The Judges and Secretariat supported the idea of giving a commendation to the best first time reporter from 2005 onwards.
DECISION:
With the above observations and against the yardsticks of completeness, credibility and communication, the Panel of Judges reviewed the reports submitted by the applicants and unanimously selected Tetra Pak Pakistan Limited, winner in the Multinational category, Pakistan Refinery Limited, winner in the Local Listed category and Engro Asahi Polymers Limited, winner in the non-listed local category for the ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Award for 2005. A commendation certificate was also announced for Lucky Textile Mills as the best first time report in PERA 2005.
"The Environmental Reporting Awards scheme and the related trophy are implicitly and
explicitly for reporting only; and reward transparency ACCA Pakistan, WWF Pakistan and the Panel of Judges clarify that the Reporting Award is only for environmental reporting and not for environmental compliance and this award in no manner certifies that the practices and policies of the awardee are sustainable or environmentally friendly".
