Excelerate Energy, Texas, a US-based company, has expressed interest to set up an offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Port Qasim, which will have storage capacity of 3 billion cubic feet of LNG.
The proposal came up during a visit of a 12-member delegation of the Excelerate Energy and Associated Group to Port Qasim here on Tuesday. Port Qasim Authority chairman Vice Admiral Asad Qureshi received the delegation, which was headed by Excelerate Energy vice-president Jonathan Cook, Port Qasim Authority statement said.
The delegation apprised the PQA management of latest concept of the energy bridge technology whereby a vessel is based offshore and this can store 3 billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas. The gas can be transported to a jetty by high-pressured pipeline.
The other latest system was buoy concept, which was operational in Mexico. It could transport liquefied natural gas to land or directly connect to another pipe for transporting LNG wherever it was required, they said. The delegation informed that the buoy system was operational in Mexico and pipeline system was in operational in USA and in United Kingdom.
Liquefied natural gas was being shipped to jetty through high-pressure pipeline. This concept also helped in facilitation of LNG and vessels-based offshore could act as storage tanks for safety purpose. The delegation wanted the PQA to facilitate them to set up their own jetty and a channel for supplying liquefied natural gas operations.
They would require 12 feet draught for this purpose. The PQA chairman appreciated the proposal of liquefied natural gas terminal and assured the delegation that it would be given due weight as Pakistan was in need of liquefied natural gas.
He also briefed them about the ongoing and future development projects of the PQA.
