28 Apr, 2006

Dams are a source of low cost electricity and by constructing more dams, Pakistan' s industry can compete at the international level. Former GM Tarbela Dam Hassam-ud-Din Bangash said this on Thursday.
Talking to PTV, he said that with the construction of dams if the electricity were cheaper by 20 per cent it would be a big boost for industries and also for the household consumers.
Before the construction of Tarbela Dam, Pakistan used to fulfil its most of the need by imports, he said adding that after the construction of Tarbela Dam, Pakistan was able to export Wheat. "The construction of Bhasha Dam will have a social affect on Pakistan," he added.
"It will be the solution of all problems of the country and will create more jobs opportunities, Bangash said adding that it should have started in 1996." Talking about Kalabagh Dam, he was of the view that technically Pakistan could simultaneously construct both Bhasha and Kalabagh dams. Pakistan is enjoying good relations with other countries and can take financial and technical assistance from them for this purpose, he added.
