04 May, 2006

Pakistan Peoples Party Deputy Secretary General and the Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani has said the Election Commission under the new Chief Election Commissioner had failed the litmus test of holding free, fair and honest elections as mandated by the Constitution.
"The by-elections in NA-219 Hyderabad has exposed the hallow claims of the Commission as it stood as a silent spectator to the use of the state apparatus to manipulate the results in the favour of the ruling coalition thus violating the Constitutional mandate given to it," the PPP leader said in a statement.
He said the 'inaction and the inability of the Commission' to restrain the members of the ruling coalition and functionaries of the Government from acting in a manner contrary to law and its lack of control on its own election staff.
