Labour laws in Pakistan are not in conformity to the international labour standards, said ILO Geneva Policy Planning Director Dr Rashid Amjad here on Friday.
While delivering a lecture on "Why Pakistan must breakout into the knowledge economy" organised by the GC University Economics Department, Rashid Amjad said 'knowledge' rather than traditional factors of production increasingly drove the global economy namely land and capital. He said knowledge products mainly technology intensive and more sophisticated export products were the fastest growing in the global economy. He mentioned that low technology and low sophisticated products dominated Pakistan's export structure. He also dilated on the weaknesses in the functioning of labour market in Pakistan.
The real challenge is to change the mindset and develop institutions, which recognise the value of investing in education and skills and provides dignity, respect and fair deal to working women and men, he added.
