THE RUPEE: dollar stay put in interbank

06 May, 2006

The rupee retained its overnight levels versus the dollar in the interbank market on Friday at 60.06 and 60.07 ahead of the weekend, dealers said.
According to some players there was some increase in demand for dollar as importers continued buying to meet the payment requirements. They apprehended the dollar may gain more ground in the coming days.
In the world markets, the US dollar marked time just off a one-year trough against the euro and steadied against the yen and sterling on Friday, supported by expectations that strength in US jobs data could reverse its three-week sell-off.
The rupee failed to maintain its overnight firmness, losing 15 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 75.80 and Rs 75.90, respectively.
The single European currency recovered lost ground on the back of rise in its value globally, dealers said.
