07 May, 2006

Properly cooked chicken and eggs are safe for human consumption and vital for physical and mental growth of children and adults, officials of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock said on Saturday.
So far, there have been no reports from any part of the world of any person contacting avian influenza virus after eating poultry products which were cooked at temperature of 70 degree centigrade or above.
"Therefore, the poultry products especially chicken and eggs can be used without any hesitation," an official of the ministry said. The bird flu is basically a disease of chicken and its virus cannot survive in a food cooked in Pakistani style, he added.
Some experts have explained that even if an infected chicken is cooked at high temperatures - the way it is when making local dishes - the virus is eliminated.
