Drug smuggling bid foiled

10 May, 2006

An attempt to smuggle hashish abroad was thwarted when the Drug Enforcement Cell of Customs Preventive Collectorate succeeded in detecting 278 kg charas concealed in fish export consignment being sent to Toronto, Canada by air.
The exporter has been arrested while investigations are under progress to unearth local and international links behind the racket. Customs sources said the case revealed a change in the mode of narcotics smuggling to North American countries.
Meanwhile, another attempt to smuggle foreign liquor and POL products was foiled by Customs Anti-Smuggling Organisation by seizing 430 bottles of assorted foreign liquor, 1,950 litres petrol, 1,800 litres mobil oil and 150 cartons of washing powder from a passenger bus on RCD Highway.
