May and June are expected to be dry, occasionally there could be rain but it would not exceed 5-10 mm, Director Met Dr Ghulam Rasool said on Tuesday. Talking to PTV, he said it could give temporarily relief but would not increase water reservoirs.
Less rain was due to climate change and climate variability is on at accelerated pace, he added. Director Met said frequency of dry and wet spells was increasing and frequency of hot waves was more than cold waves, adding that cold waves were better for weather as it increases water reservoirs.
He said, due to more hot waves snow melting was fast and melting of glaciers was not a good sign, adding that it was a global phenomenon. This situation, he said, was for the sub-continent and as far as there would be dry season, heat would also prevail.
Comparing season with last year, he said, there was very good snow last year but this year snow spell was very short and it was 25 percent less than normal. Situation is changing every year and February was 60 degree warmer than normal, he added.
