City Nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday, while laying the foundation stone of the National Stadium interchange said that the proposed project would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 671 million in four months.
Transport and Communication EDO Muhammad Ather, Works and Services EDO Sarfraz Ali Shah, town Nazims and other city government officials were present on the occasion.
The Nazim said that the proposed project had been divided into two phases and the entire project would be completed in eight months. In the first phase, he said, 210-metre long fly-over would be constructed during four months, while in the second phase 4.6-metre long underpass would be undertaken.
He said the proposed project would encroach around 1.5 acres land of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) at the National Stadium Karachi, while the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) would, in response, try to build a ramp of the proposed fly-over at the National Stadium in order to provide direct access to the PCB officials, cricketers and touring teams into stadium.
Lauding PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan for allowing construction of proposed interchange at the National Stadium, he said, the construction of the interchange would not be possible if the PCB did not support the CDGK.
He said spadework had been done to carryout uninterrupted construction work, while utilities had already been shifted to the sides of the road.
Regarding alternative route for traffic, the Nazim said that in order to allow smooth flow of traffic during the construction period, a new route had been introduced with installation of traffic signals.
Acknowledging the problems caused by the ongoing uplift projects in the metropolis, he said that the problems being faced by the people would not last for long and with the completion of development projects they would enjoy all sorts of civic facilities.
He hoped the developmental projects would change the entire outlook of the city.
Taking notice of unsatisfactory pace of construction work at the Karsaz fly-over, Kamal directed the Works and Services Department EDO to strictly monitor pace of construction work of the project.
He also asked the respective contractor to ensure completion of the project on time, adding that if the contractor was unable to carryout construction work at the Karsaz fly-over then the contract of the respective contractor would be cancelled.
