US urges Syria to stop pretending

13 May, 2006

US Ambassador John Bolton on Friday urged Syria to stop pretending that Lebanon is now an independent country and instead to establish diplomatic ties with Beirut and demarcate their common border.
He made the remarks as France, the United States and Britain on Friday formally submitted a draft resolution in the Security Council urging the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between Lebanon and Syria and a demarcation of their common border. "The border and the diplomatic relations are critical to force Syria to come out of denial that Lebanon is an independent country," Bolton said. "If you're not willing to recognise another country, if you're not willing to delineate the border between two countries that are neighbours, .... It's a way of saying that Lebanon's not an independent country."
