Suspected pro-Taleban militants seized a checkpoint and shot dead a guard near a restive tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said on Sunday. Sultan Mahsud was shot dead late on Saturday by militants at Jandola checkpoint near the troubled region of South Waziristan, a local official told AFP.
The attackers, who came in a car from South Waziristan, asked the security guards to open the checkpoint as they were taking a patient to hospital in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, the official said requesting anonymity.
As the guards opened the gates the militants overpowered them and shot Mahsud, who died on the spot, the official said, adding that the attackers fled the scene after the killing.
Separately, a government official was shot dead outside his house in Dera Ismail Khan, but officials said that it was not immediately clear who was behind the killing.
