Medical experts have warned of heat stroke or Sun stroke which can cause instant death during the scorching summer if preventive measures are not adopted.
Chairman Shaikh Zayed Hospital Professor Anwaar A Khan said on May 15 that sun strokes strike men, in particular elderly males, more as compared to women. It occurs due to failure of the body's heat regulating mechanism.
Highlighting the symptoms of the stroke, he said in the first step body water is lost through constant perspiration but later sweating ceases and internal body temperature shoots up to dangerous levels-and could to go as high as 106 degree F.
Dr Anwaar stressed that the stroke victims should be immediately moved to a cooler place and be given cold water or ice sponging in the limbs to restore the blood circulation. The salt and water drips should also be given to the persons as a treatment, it was learnt.
Professor of Medicine, Shaikh Zayed Dr Farrukh Iqbal has advised the people to avoid direct exposure to heat and stay indoor as much as possible. When going out the head and neck area must be duly covered, he added.
Plenty of chilled drinks with a dash of salt are a good preventive measure, he said. Citing the importance of oriental drinks such as "lassi", sattu, shakkar sharbat, lemon water etc", he said these are much more helpful than the commercial drinks.
