Al-Ghurair Group and Al Mazyood Jewellery launched the first gold refinery in UAE, a Dh50 million project within Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre (DMCC).
The new enterprise called Al-Ghurair Giga Gold (GGG) refinery, with the annual capacity of 100 tons initially, aims to create a new corporate identity in the gold market of the UAE symbolising the three initial "G"s for the three "9"s quality.
Al-Ghurair Giga Gold Refinery is located at the Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre (DMCC), a newly established free zone in Dubai, which consists of refineries, manufacturing units and offices. Located in DMCC complex at Emirates Hills off the Sheikh Zayed Road, the new project is a joint venture between the Al Ghurair Group and Haji Muhammad Rafiq, owner of Mazyood Jewellery who holds 49 per cent stake in the venture and will act as managing director of the project.
According to Haji Muhammad Rafiq, with a capacity of 100 tons a year initially and a turnover of $1 billion, the refinery will meet international standards. With the large regional market of almost 2,000 tons of annual gold imports, there was a scope for further expansion by adding another 100 tons of yearly capacity.
India alone imports 875 tones of gold per year in addition to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Pakistan, and Iran - the other big gold consumers in the region. As the DMCC will be into the bullion auction, this internationally requires the availability at any time of 25 tons of gold every day, and that the production capacity of the new refinery will grow as per market demand.
Al-Ghurair Giga Gold refinery which has attained the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 certifications, uses its refined gold for the production of 'Ten Tola Bar 999', '100 Grams 999', '1 Kg 995' and '1 Kg 999'. They will be increasing their employee strength by recruiting more value addition operators, chemists and process engineers, which if demand requires, will allow the refinery to operate at full capacity. It is understood in short span of time refinery has reached its full capacity production. We look forward to making rapid strides of progress over the coming months and strengthening Dubai's image as the centre for trade of gold and other precious metals."
