Central Secretary Information Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sherry Rehman has strongly condemned the military led government's latest attempt to involve Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in trumped up cases.
She said in a statement that not only has the regime abused the judicial process by asking for red warrants in a case where the PPP chairperson is alleged to have concealed her assets, it has made an international laughing stock of itself by asking Interpol to be involved in cases which actually lie within the purview of the chief election commissioner's office.
When he has found no irregularity in her asset statements filed for the 1993 election, why is NAB resorting to a district session's judge to harass an elected popular leader of Pakistan? Sherry Rehman posed a question. Ms Rehman also questioned the timing of the most recent salvo thrown by the regime at Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
Referring to reports about NAB being used to file a fresh reference against the PPP chairperson in the UN Oil for Food Programme, she asked why the regime is so unsure of itself, when every time Mohtarma Bhutto meets Nawaz Sharif? When the case has already been dismissed, why is NAB embarrassing itself by opening it up again? Pakistan's rulers are not able to disguise their anxiety the moment any contacts between two mainstream political parties are confirmed, she said.
It is their own illegitimacy that haunts the non-reprehensive cabal of rulers running this country every time they see prospects of a return to democracy in Pakistan, she said. Ever since the Charter of Democracy has been signed, said Rehman, the junta has become unhinged and increasingly panicky at the challenge this poses to its survival.
