KESC's fast meters

07 Jun, 2006

KESC has recently started installing manipulated, fast meters in place of existing faultless meters. The new meters are fast in the sense that they are registering more than 300 percent units in excess of actual consumption.
This in effect is an unwarranted, unauthorised and illegal levying of additional fuel adjustment charge unofficially. It is not only against the penal provisions of weight and measurement laws but also without prior permission of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority. It is not allowed that increase in rates be effected in an indirect manner by using fast and faulty energy meters.
It transpires that KESC's installation of defective, false, and fast meters is aimed at escaping tariff restrictions against increasing of rates contrary to law. As for the expenditure on the installation of new meters, it will be more than fully met by the meter rent charged from consumers every month. Thus the consumers will be paying for their own robbing. Regretfully, despite the consumers' resentment and complaints, the matter has not been analysed by appropriate KESC quarters with a view to withdrawing the veiled additional fuel adjustment charge through the removal of fast meters. KESC's continuing silence is inexplicable.
