Bangladesh's exports rose 29.87 percent in April from a year earlier to $846.17 million boosted by knitwear sales, officials of the state-run Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) said on Tuesday.
Exports for July to April, the first 10 months of the current financial year, were more than 20 percent higher than the same period of the previous year, at $8.36553 billion.
But the price index of Bangladeshi exportable products fell by 2.67 percent in the period while the export volume picked up by 22.84 percent. Knitwear exports surged by 32.86 percent to $3.00 billion in the first 10 months of 2005/06 fiscal year from a year earlier.
Export of knitwear products including sweaters, T-shirts, undergarments and socks to some major markets have increased substantially after the quota phase-out at the end of 2004. Total earnings from knit exports were $2.82 billion in 2004-05 fiscal year.
Export of woven garments rose close to 12 percent to $3.26 billion in that period from a year earlier.
Bangladesh earned $6.42 billion from the textile exports in the year ended in June 2005, in which total exports rose 14.5 percent to $8.7 billion from $7.6 billion a year earlier.
