Muttahida toeing establishment's agenda: Baloch

10 Jun, 2006

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Friday alleged that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was politicking with the blessing of civil and military bureaucracy without roots in the society.
Talking to journalists at the parliament house's cafeteria, MMA's deputy secretary-general Liaquat Baloch said the MQM was in politics merely to safeguard its vested interests through blackmailing successive governments. He was of the view the MQM had always followed the dictation of the establishment, adding it would do so again.
To a question, he said if the MQM was really interested in going with other political parties for restoring real democracy in the country then it should first withdraw its support to the government.
Commenting on the MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed's statement about not participating in the general elections under President General Pervez Musharraf, he said although it is his personal opinion yet, he said, Qazi's point of view carries significant weight.
The MMA chief would act as per constitution and final decision of the MMA, he added. Baloch said the present position of President Pervez Musharraf is against the constitution and another election under him would be nothing but a farce.
According to the constitution, he said, Musharraf could not get elected for the second-term from the present assemblies, if he would do so, it means that the military's role in politics still persists.
