US blue chip stocks fell sharply on Friday, giving up gains from earlier in the session, as worries about higher interest rates and about slowing economic growth moved back into focus.
Helping to lead the downward movement was manufacturer 3M Co, which fell 1.7 percent to $80.30. Equipment maker Caterpillar Inc was among the Dow's advancing stocks, rising 1 percent to $67.57.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 59.31 points, or 0.54 percent, at 10,879.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 6.85 points, or 0.54 percent, at 1,251.08. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 8.16 points, or 0.38 percent, at 2,137.16.
