Need to root out poppy production in Kabul emphasised

14 Jun, 2006

Pakistan is a poppy-free country, but Afghanistan is the main problem as it is producing heroin and feeding Pakistan and other countries, said Anwar Rafiq, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Narcotics Control, here on Tuesday.
Unless poppy cultivation in Afghanistan was eradicated completely, drug smuggling could not be brought under control, he said while addressing a function about creating awareness against drug use and smuggling held at Arts Council here.
The function was jointly organised by the Ministry of Narcotics Control and Rawalpindi Arts Council to impart awareness to masses. Students presented portraits about drug addiction for display. Besides, a tableau was also presented.
Rafiq said that a survey was held in 2000 under which four million people were found as drug addicts.
