'Smooth water supply be ensured during monsoon season'

Managing Director, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Brigadier Iftikhar Haider has directed the concerned authorities to ensure smooth water supply to the metropolis from all 131 pumping stations throughout the monsoon season.
Presiding over a meeting here at the Ninth Mile on Shahrae Faisal on Wednesday, he said in case the power breakdowns during the monsoon rains, the department should have alternative sources to provide uninterrupted water to the city.
Directing the officials of the mechanical and electrical department of the KWSB, he said the department should arrange power generators to cope with the untoward situation during rainy season.
"In line with the directives of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, the KWSB would clean the storm-water drains phase-wise," he said and added that the drains containing high ratio of mud and other solid matter obstructing the smooth flow of sewerage water through drains would be undertaken at earliest.
He added that in the second phase of the drain cleaning campaign, the rest of the drains would be flushed out from top to bottom.
Managing Director KWSB also directed the drain cleaning staff to wear the officially provided jackets so that people could recognise them during the duration of their work. He said that all main-holes in the city should be covered with proper lids to avoid public injuries and road accidents during the monsoon rains. He also pointed out that the town nazims should also help the KWSB's drain cleaning staff and they should direct the health department of the towns to avoid dumping garbage into the drains, which hindered the flow of sewerage water.
Iftikhar Haider said the City Nazim had also directed the Police Department to co-operate with the KWSB during the drain cleaning campaign. Chief engineer zone-one Imran Asif, chief engineer zone-two Anjum Alam, chief engineer zone-three Qutab Sheikh, superintendent engineers and other KSWB officials attended the meeting.
