Argentina corn harvest slower

24 Jun, 2006

Argentina's ongoing 2005/06 corn harvest and 2006/07 wheat planting made slow progress last week due to uneven weather, the government said on Friday.
In its latest weekly update on crop developments, the Agriculture Secretariat said farmers had gathered 92 percent of the 3.07 million hectares sown to corn, an advance of just 2 percentage points for the week and a lag of 1 point behind work completed a year ago.
In top corn-growing province Cordoba, "cloudy days with high humidity levels prevented grains from drying, so few lots were harvested," the report said.
Yields from Cordoba last week averaged 5.8 tonnes per hectare, but were down to 5.5 tonnes in Santa Fe, the third-most important province for producing corn, of which Argentina is the world's second-biggest exporter.
