The body of the slain leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has been buried by Iraqi authorities but the location is unknown, the US military said Sunday.
"The remains of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi were turned over to the appropriate government of Iraq officials and buried in accordance with Muslim customs and traditions," US military spokesman Major William Wilhoite told AFP.
He however did not say where the body was actually buried.
Zarqawi, who was Iraq's most wantd man with a 25 million dollar bounty on his head, was killed in a US air strike on June 7 near the restive city of Baquba, north of Baghdad.
al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had called in an audiotape message posted on the Internet last week for him to be repatriated to his Jordanian homeland.
