Need stressed to adopt latest advancements in cane uplift

Speakers at a workshop stressed the need to adopt the latest advancements in water management practices and farm mechanisation techniques in the Sindh province. The agriculture workshop on the subject of 'Cane Development' was arranged by Pakistan Society of Sugar Technologists (PSST) at a local hotel in Hyderabad, the other day, said a statement received here on Wednesday.
Director General, Agriculture Engineering, Agha Zafarullah Durrani presented his paper on latest irrigation practices and modern techniques of irrigation. "Water is wasted due to non-maintenance of water courses and agriculture production could be increased through effective use of water by following improved water management practices," the statement said. It added that that lining of watercourses would result in conveyance efficiency, reducing seepage, percolation, and spillage besides operating losses.
The speakers were of the view that highly efficient irrigation systems of the world like sprinklers and micro-irrigated areas may be adopted which are successfully being adopted by developed nations like Germany, France, United Kingdom, United States and Italy etc.
The statement concluded with the demand of the establishment of sugar technology research and training institute in the centre as well as province of Sindh,which it said, should be considered without any further loss of time.-PR
