Sri Lankan Consul General at Karachi, Manel De Silva has described Karachi as a peaceful and loving people city which, she said, will continue to refresh her memories for ever.
Manel said that she is quite impressed by the fast development taking place here due to the efforts of Nazim and Naib Nazim while effective government measures have helped in establishing an ideal law and order here.
"I myself go for shopping to various markets without any protocol", she said while talking to City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil during a farewell call on her. Nasreen Jalil informed that Haq Parast leadership is working day and night on mega projects for the development of Karachi and these will soon be completed under the supervision of Nazim Mustafa Kamal.
The City Government, she told the Consul General, is specially focussing on health and education sectors while cultural and literary activities are also being promoted. Manel De Silva informed the Naib Nazim that Sri Lankan President was highly impressed by Karachi during visit in March 2006.
She informed that Sri Lanka has a population of 19 million with capital Colombo having a population of one million. She said that Sri Lankan government is setting up industries in Colombo and other cities to provide employment opportunities to people near their doorsteps and to check migration towards Colombo.
Nasreen Jalil said Haq Parast leadership too is aspiring for the development of entire country and its efforts are directed at laying a network of industries in the interior of province to help provide employment opportunities to people near their areas of living as well as to check pressure on Karachi.
The Sri Lankan Consul General expressed her gratitude for the people of Karachi for their help on the occasion of Tsunami hitting her country and particularly appreciated the relief goods collected by Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation.
Nasreen Jalil said that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) believes in politics for service to people. She referred to MQM's relief work in earthquake hit areas of Pakistan as a result of which, she pointed out, all negative propaganda against MQM has gone and today people are joining this movement in large number right from Karachi to Kashmir.
