22,656 adult literacy centres set up in Punjab

Literacy and Non-Formal Education minister of Punjab Hussain Jahnian Gardezi said that as many as 22,656 adult literacy centers have been established during the last four years in the province.
Giving details at a meeting of the Adult Literacy Programme of the department, he informed that so far 634,680 adult illiterates have been made literate and provided skill based training, says a handout issued here on Friday.
He said that the Punjab government has allocated huge funds to boost the literacy rate in the province and a number of projects have been launched to meet the target. "A number of neighbouring countries have increased their literacy rate by using the Non-Formal Education system," he observed, adding they can do the same by sharing the experience of these countries.
