'Loans provision to promote fish farming'

10 Jul, 2006

Due to provision of loans to small farmers on only two percent mark up, fish farming will rapidly progress in the province and farmers can contact Fisheries Department to avail this opportunity. This was stated by the Director General Fisheries Punjab Dr Muhammad Ayub while giving details about this loan scheme.
He said that due to aquatic pollution fish production has diminished to a large extent and this shortage can be made up only through fish farming. He said that as a result of measures taken by the government, fish farming has assumed the form of an industry.
He further said that besides 14 large production units operated by fisheries department, 29 nursery units are supplying fish seeds to the farmers while more than 70 hatcheries are functioning in private sector.
He said that there is need to frame strict laws to check aquatic pollution as it is harmful to both human beings as well as aquatic life.
